Where Did All the Larps Go?

You may have noticed that there seem to be fewer products available on the website, DTRPG and on itch. Well, don’t panic; this is all according to plan. Toward the end of this year, Drowning Moon Studios intends to release an omnibus edition of all of our larps in a single volume, so the individual games are no longer available for purchase. There were lots of reasons we chose to do this: several games are due for a polish, with updated text and graphics, individual larps have never sold as well as collections or tabletop games, and we’ve found that players are simply more inclined to play the games when they’re sold in collections. Once, Drowning Moon Studios put out dozens of short games a year, but in the past couple of years, we’ve found that model is unsustainable. Instead, we’d much rather focus on releasing one or two high-quality projects per year, taking the time to really focus on all aspects of design.

Currently we have three projects for 2021: Mage to Order, Follow Me Down’s ashcan, and the short larp omnibus. With Mage to Order currently printing, and Follow Me Down’s ashcan already released in anticipation of the game’s Kickstarter in October, we’ve only got the omnibus left to complete this year. In the meantime, we’ll not only fine tune a few of our older games, but prepare to release the full version of Follow Me Down and Kickstart our ZineQuest4 project St. Clotilde’s Academy in 2022.

We’ve mentioned before that 2020 and the pandemic have changed the way the tabletop gaming industry functions, likely permanently. For Drowning Moon Studios, we’ve decided in favor of refinement and quality over quantity. As always, we appreciate our players and customers. This focus on quality will ensure that every product released by Drowning Moon Studios is a game we can be proud of.
